Stream Etiquette Pt 8: 'Play Something Else'

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

Two words. "Play Fortnite".

We've covered this phrase already through several of my prior guides and the point still rings true here.

Chances are if you were a variety streamer on Mixer or one who simply didn't play Fortnite? You possibly heard these two words at one point at least once.

If you're among those who said it? Lemme explain something to you alright?

Whatever a streamer is playing, you stopped by their channel while they were in the middle of that game, so unless they ask the viewers through a direct question or a poll what they should play next? Telling them to play something else is disrespectful not just to them, but the people who are there not just for the streamer and his/her commentary, but for that specific game.

I myself actually appreciate and respect someone who comes in and asks me if I've played a particular game and requests politely by asking if I can play it.

Even if I didn't then? If I had the game I would usually put it on my schedule for the future. I've even at times purchased a game that was suggested because a viewer was interested in me streaming it (which of course is the opposite of times that I mentioned where a viewer bought a game they saw me playing).

But like I said with telling someone to shout you out or to shut up and play the game? Telling someone what to do is only going to get you ire from them and their viewers.

A streamer playing Breath of The Wild isn't just going to switch games because you came in and wanted them to play GTA V. They have a certain plan they go by for each stream before it starts (though I tend to improvise my planned games sometimes especially if the game I was going to play ended up not working or another issue) and its about what they want to play.

Maybe they also have a specific daily theme (Like I myself used to have) thus even if they wanted to play the game you suggested? They likely won't play a horror game on retro day.

Plus the game you tell them to switch to may be one they either don't even like, don't own, or simply don't want to play. If you want to see a specific game played, just as I said about rushing a streamer and backseat gaming? Look for another channel playing it.

You likely saw what game they were playing before you entered the stream and thus could've possibly found someone else playing the game you wanted to see through a quick typed search in the time it took you to tell someone to switch the game in a failed attempt. Especially when you have thousands of other streamers who "play fortnite" at any given time.

And if no one else is playing the game you want to see? Again, Youtube it, given that if you were concerned more about the game being played than the streamer, let alone the want's of them and the other viewers? You won't mind the absence of interaction from a lets play.
